As a printmaker I enjoy the surprise that is built into the process of printmaking. There are a lot of unpredictables and this creative process expresses my spontaneity in experimenting with color, size and composition. I find inspiration in observing the explosion of colors in the skies and the subtle changes in nature that surrounds us. The images I have created through this very versatile method of monotype printing allows a great deal freedom.

Marsha Borden is a contemporary textile and installation artist. She has shown her work locally and nationally since 2016 and has received numerous press reviews and jurors’ awards. Borden was recently awarded the 2022 Arts Support Award through the Connecticut Sea Grant program. She is thrilled to be developing a new body of work relative to the Sea Grant’s mission.

Oi Fortin
Erector Square Building 8, Studio C

Oi Fortin is a multimedia artist with a primary focus in Monotype Printmaking. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand and now lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Her current work is inspired in part by Henri Matisse’s Cut-Outs. She cut-out shapes in newsprint and modified the pressure of the printing press to transfer the inked cut-outs onto printmaking paper. Her prints are made in layers; each layer has to dry before another can be added. A finished piece can have 8-10 layers, taking up to 6 weeks to finish. This series expresses both meditative calm and exuberant, joyful energy.

Paul Theriault

Paul Theriault lives and works in New Haven Connecticut, close to his birthplace of Milford Connecticut in 1972. His practice lies primarily within the idiom of abstraction but produced using electronic media. Theriault has been exploring the possibilities of electronic media within the context of artistic production for the past two decades. From 1992-2004, he lived in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied orchestral technique of the contra bass and worked primarily in digital video and sound based art. Theriault has exhibited work regularly in North America as well as had his video work screened overseas.

Peyton Peyton

Peyton Peyton is currently based in New Haven, CT since graduating from Yale School of Art in 2020 with an MFA in sculpture. Peyton Peyton utilizes textiles processes, craft, and embodied movement to create garments, sculptures, object-based performance, and other time based media. She recently completed a fellowship at MASS MoCa’s studios residency program where she learned how to weave on a floor loom. Since then, weaving has become an integral part of her practice, as she overlays her studio practice with her studies in family constellations therapy, psychomagic, tarot, and plants.

Phyllis Crowley grew up in New York City. She learned how to use a camera from her father at age 11, and how to print shortly after that. They worked in a tiny room in their apartment on an old table with water carried in from the kitchen. Some years ago, she switched from black & white darkroom work to digital photography, and never looked back.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut. Lives and works in New Haven, CT and New York In her recent series, biomorphic shapes emerge in highly saturated color devoid of their original narratives. They are inspired by alien figures, body parts, and fringe characters happily living outside societal norms. They fill with colors like bright Cadmium Orange, Naphthol Red, and Quinacridone Opera (a pink that has the subtlety of a Liberace pantsuit). Like a skin, the canvases are pinned directly to the wall. The smaller and medium-sized works are completed by being nailed to wood panels. Her process often includes tearing down the surface with the intention of building it up once again in layers. She is attracted to the lore of Frankenstein- an amour of the art of tearing down and rebuilding, reconfiguring flesh and ground, and questioning desire. The human body and our collective stories, lived and imagined, are a continued source of inspiration for her practice. Recent exhibitions include New Normal: Working Through Quarantine, Payne Gallery-Moravian University, Bethlehem, PA (2021); The Whitney Biennial in participation with Occupy Museums, New York, NY (2017); High Plains Highways, The Amarillo Museum of Art, Amarillo, TX (2016); Re-Picturing Photography, Union Street Gallery, Chicago Heights, IL (2015); Sound and Fury, Chandler Center for the Arts, Randolph, VT (2015). In 2019, Renee curated and organized DISARM, a group show and benefit held at Automatic Studios in DUMBO. She received a grant from the Mayer Foundation for a photo project along Route 66 and has been an artist in residence at Main Street Arts and Lacawac Artist Residency.

She holds a MFA in Painting from Western CT State University. She has exhibited her work at Boston University Art Galleries, Boston MA; Dallas Public Library, Dallas TX; First Street Gallery, NYC; Silvermine Arts Center, New Canaan, CT; URSA Gallery, Bridgeport, CT; The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas, TX; Blue Mountain Gallery, NYC. Her work is included in several private collections.

Todd Lyon

Todd Lyon started her art career in downtown NYC in the 1980s, making 6′ x 4′ paintings that combined figurative work with collage and the written word. Fast forward to 2018, when she rebooted her painting life by joining the venerable Brush & Palette Club at the Ely Center for Contemporary Art. This collection of work is from those long-form model sessions. At the Open Source exhibit at Erector Square, she will also be showing landscapes, figure drawings, and small “boudoir” paintings of vintage jewelry.

Clara Nartey

Clara Nartey is a self-taught artist who critiques beauty standards and examines the role of hair in the identity and culture of Black women. Her work, which has been widely exhibited nationally, is inspired by how fabrics are used in her African heritage to tell stories, memorialize events, and to share words of wisdom. Her portraits counter negative stereotypes about Black hair and build confidence in young girls and women.

Jean Scott

Jean Scott is a MICA graduate who lives and works in Branford, CT. DOING THE DISHES is an ongoing series of paintings on repurposed plates – a perfect platform for playing out the conflict between duty and desire. Some are even food-functional.

Julie Krishnaswami creates books, performances, and works on paper. Drawing on feminist perspectives of history, she uses interdisciplinary research to guide her practice. Interrogating her experiences as a woman, mother, lawyer, and law librarian, she unpacks norms around work, resulting in structural observations about contemporary labor conditions. Julie holds a BA from Reed College, a JD from CUNY School of Law, an MLIS from Pratt Institute, and an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

The works incorporate a return to drawing on paper for a digital pioneer, as she melds microscopic life photographed by scientists in the Menden-Deuer lab at the University of Rhode Island with mysteries of an ancient decorated Text.

Susan McCaslin’s sculptural works are odes to home and security. Using various mixed media (paper mache, sumi ink and newspaper among others), she creates her own landscapes of houses and walls, vessels and boulders. As a photographer, McCaslin often just stops by the side of the road or interrupts her daily walks to capture the texture and position of a tree, the light of a scene, or the architecture of a composition. Having been raised in the midst of dairy farms in Pennsylvania, she is comfortable with landscape alongside her passion for the messy detritus of long-closed closets and forgotten attic and cellar boxes.

I have painted for the last 45 years in a wide variety of formats, styles and mediums . My primary focus has been abstract work of a constructiveness nature, exploring color, symmetries and spatial illusion. I am presently employing extensive patterning in multi-panel works, some flat other tilted also exploring mono-tone palettes and more random pictorial structures. I am not quite sure what an artist statement should be. Should we describe what we do so others might want to see it. Should we describe in some vague way what we think or feel about our work. When I work the medium is the message, the form is just the container of the process. The individual work though appearing precious become less important than the new work that is the current focus. Yueting Zhao

Yueting focused on the record of some state of affairs which is making the index of the original objects through labor-intensive process. Her working media included darkroom photography, paper casting, rubbing, silicone casting, printmaking and photo transferring. The indices are ghostly which implies an emptiness, a hollowness that merely indicated “thereness,” an irrefutable partial presence but mythical and illusional. She did not aim to build mimetic copies of objects, but considered the index as a momentum to bridge the abstract and reality. The goal is to reveal the absence (the original objects) through the presence (the index) within her works.

Joe Fekieta is a life-long New Haven artist and writer, currently residing in the Hill Neighborhood. He has a large vegetable garden, exercises and tap-dances every day. In his home studio, he creates complex series and thematic books with writing that comments, often humorously, about our contemporary American culture. In his back yard, he creates engaging and memorable installations that have been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios for seven consecutive years. This year, his latest installation “Fat & Dangerous” at the Wilson Library, is a dramatic commentary about how obesity is contributing to global warming.

David Holzman

David Holzman received an MFA from SAIC in 1983 and taught in Simsbury schools until 2020. He makes sculpture, prints and paintings. He comes from the woodcut novel tradition and is the creator of The Book of Umm.

Karen Dow

Karen Dow is a printmaker working in linocut, woodcut and mono print. Her abstract imagery draws on reflections of domesticity, relationships, memory and story-telling. Each print is unique, with color, pattern, process and mark-making, all playing an integral role. Her intent is to create a situational space that contains a sense of natural beauty and intuitive balance where the eye can rest.

Kevin Van Aelst is a Fine Art Photographer based in Hamden Connecticut. His artwork has been exhibited internationally, including one-person shows at the Center for Fine Art Photography, Panopticon Gallery, and Real Art Ways. His photo-illustrations can be seen regularly in such publications as Time, Wired, The Atlantic, Fast Company, Scientific American, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and on book covers such as Rachel Maddow’s, Drift.

Sabrina Marques has a BA from Columbia University and an MFA from the Yale School of Art. Solo exhibitions include Real Art Ways, Whittier College, and Yale University, and group exhibitions at Geoffrey Young Gallery, The Berkshire Botanical Garden, and Morgan Lehman Gallery. Alana Ladson is an illustrator and character designer who loves to read, write, and draw. Her experience is rooted in the arts, education and advocacy– she loves working with youth, making art and sharing what her students call “sage-wisdom”. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Linda Falcão is a civil rights lawyer and mediator, founder of the fundraising organization America Serves, and new artist using art as provocative social commentary. “Triumph of the Tampons,” celebrating female empowerment, is the first of a trio of Shadowbox Truths. She is currently working on “Unborn babies have daddies too,” and “I’d rather put it in the bank than on my face.” She previously exhibited her photography in local shows in PA, MD, and NC, and had a reading from her screenplay “Out Flying Past My Bedtime” at the New Hope Film Festival.

I love photography. I especially love the image that is created by natural light hitting celluloid, otherwise known as film. That’s why I shoot film. The majority of the photographs that are here were taken with film. On a very few of the photographs, some color corrections were made. My mission is to capture the history, contributions and culture of people of African ancestry with an honest point of view. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed making them.

Stephany chooses materials based on ideas surrounding beauty in the grotesque and poetry, finding meaning in materiality and process.

Deborah Greco is a landscape artist residing in Guilford, CT. Deb has a BFA from Syracuse University School of Visual Arts and has studied at the Arts Students League, Silvermine School of Art, The School of Visual Arts, workshops with master pastellists Chris Ivers and Liz Haywood Sullivan, and is currently studying with nationally known landscape painter David Dunlop.

Frank Bruckmann

Frank Bruckmann discovered painting in his 20’s, while living in his native state, New Jersey. Compelled by the seductive properties of oil paints, he began studying at the DuCret School of Art, and at the Art Students League in New York City. Early on, he knew he had embarked upon a lifelong career, as professors and art collectors encouraged him to continue his studies abroad, and so he spent nearly a decade in Europe. In Paris, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Paris American Academy. Wanting to better understand the techniques of the Great Masters, he found himself in the Musee D’Orsay and the Louvre copying painters from Frans Hals to Cezanne. Later in Madrid, Frank copied at the Museo de Prado, reproducing painters like Velasques and El Greco.

I grew up in Greenwich Village in New York City, spending weekends and summers in upstate New York where I learned to love nature. Extended studies at the University of Delaware ending in 1998 also provided me with ample opportunity to love nature, and in particular the seashore; it is in Delaware that I discovered photography. After a brief career in New York City, I left the business world to return to academia and moved to the Connecticut shoreline in 2004. I am by trade a Social Psychologist and was employed full-time as a Professor at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut until January 2021, at which time I entered the semi-retired population. I still teach and do research consulting, but I now have a lot more time to focus on my loves which include traveling, enjoying nature, gardening (flowers and vegetables and fruits), and of course photography. I shoot using a digital SLR camera, and what I see is what you get; I do not edit, filter, or crop my images. The largest manipulation I embark on is to move an object to different spaces, experimenting with background color and surface. My work explores the beauty (and sometimes tragedy) of nature and human experience, examining color, form, movement, and physical traces of human activity. I have exhibited and sold my work locally at area summer and fall festivals, art shows at my college, and the former City-Wide Open Studios.

Before moving to NYC and Los Angeles, Moscariello was a longtime resident of New Haven, Connecticut.

I enjoy manipulating metal in unexpected ways, transforming hard sheet and wire into organic shapes and textures. Bending, folding, reticulating, hammering, and melting are all exploratory processes I use to see where the metal takes me. I love the surprises and solutions that come from allowing my creative energy to flow. Engaging in a creative process is a playful way for me to stretch my thinking, problem-solve, experiment with ideas, and express them in ways not limited by words. Making art grounds me, feeds my spirit, and is a vital part of my expressive self.

Marjorie Wolfe

I have been a photographer for five decades and was an art teacher for thirty-seven years. I received a BFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design and Masters from Wesleyan University. A recipient of the Connecticut Artist Fellowship, my work has been exhibited widely and won numerous awards, including at RISD, ECOCA, and numerous venues in the northeast. My work has appeared in various publications, including The New York Times and Camera Arts Magazine. In New Haven I often exhibit at KLG in Westville.

Lessser create vived and compelling images with acrylic and flashe vinyl paint. She also makes short animated film which complement the paintings. Each work portrays contemporary concerns such as climate change, gun control, pollution, refugees and immigration. The vibrant color and senes of humor contrast with the works’ messages.

Sven’s images can be seen at Kehler Liddell Gallery during Open Source. His show titled: Grow Up! features images of juveniles in education. Sven prefers to find images. He photographs what is significant to him in the physical world. It is his hope to discover and record meaningful moments in this life through the process and craft of photography. Sven takes photographs because it pleases him to capture and show something he has seen that had meaning for him. Sven Martson received his BA from Syracuse University. After further studies, he met Walker Evans and worked under his direction, making prints from Evans’ negatives. After Evans’ death, Martson continued to print for the Evans estate. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibits including National Association of Independent Schools, Washington DC, Kiek in de Kök Museum Gallery, Tallinn, Estonia, The Connecticut Open Real Art Ways, Hartford CT, Artspace, New Haven CT, Mattatuck Museum, Waterbury CT, Connecticut State Capitol, Hartford CT, Shoreline Alliance for the Arts, Guilford CT, Exposure Gallery, New Haven CT, Jennifer Jane Gallery, New Haven CT and Schelfhaudt Gallery, University of Bridgeport.

The artist pushes a shovel into the ground, separating a volume of dirt from below. He lifts the volume upward and dumps it on the surface of the ground next to the negative space where the dirt was, creating in that three-part gesture a relation between negative space and positive form. This way of thinking about process infuses ongoing projects.

Thuan Vu

Thuan Vu was born in Saigon, Vietnam and settled with his family in New Orleans, LA. The recipient of numerous awards and grants, Thuan exhibits and lectures nationally. His paintings examine constructions of identity, especially those of Vietnamese refugees. His latest series of Kintsugi paintings revolve around the Japanese philosophy of embracing damage and wounds. This philosophy finds beauty in healing, scars being celebrated and highlighted with precious gold. His research has taken him to Vietnam, Japan, and Paris, where he studies Vietnamese communities world-wide. A dedicated and enthusiastic educator, Thuan lives in New Haven, CT where he has been a Professor of Art at Southern Connecticut State University for 23 years.

Painting is a part of my life, just as going to work and trying to figure out how to budget my finances so as to continue my profession. My artwork is meant for a general audience. The paintings are representational snap shots of my everyday life, much like a visual diary. The works are predominately created from direct observation. However, lately, I have introduced some works that involve television commercials and media. At first, I was concerned about the purity of my subject matter but realized how life has become so media oriented that I would start to embrace it. The lack of access to painting people from life also spurred my involvement with social media.
