Melanie Crean’s project, If Justice Is a Woman, reimagines the iconography of justice in murals on display at the New Haven County Court House. The original paintings, based on white patriarchal vision, traditionally depict Justice in female form, but how would women working to change the justice system in New Haven choose to represent it today? How does an aesthetic of mutual aid differ from common depictions of hierarchical justice?
