On July 7, 1876 in Hamburg, South Carolina, Benjamin Tillman led a contingent of white supremacists called the Red Shirts, who murdered six African Americans in an effort to suppress the black voter. Tellingly, Tillman later went on serve a 24-year career in the United States Senate. At the start of the new century, he reflected on his life in politics: “We have done our level best [to prevent blacks from voting] … We have scratched our heads to find out how we could eliminate the last one of them. We stuffed ballot boxes. We shot them. We are not ashamed of it.”
