IMMST: Live Performance by Africanus Okokon
IMMST is a performed sonic-visual experience and ongoing project by our 2020-21 Artist-in-Residence Africanus Okokon. This performance will take place in the gallery as part of City-Wide Open Studios 2020.
“As he told me that I am still alive, my people simply told him to call me home with the power of his ‘Invisible Missive Magnetic Juju’ which could bring a lost person back to home from an unknown place, how far it may be, with or without the will of the lost person. So having paid him his workmanship in advance, then he started to send the juju to me at night which was changing my mind or thought every time to go home.” -Amos Tutuola
The event is free, but registration is required in order to participate in person. There will be four 30 minute performances at 5pm, 5:30pm, 6pm and 6:30pm. Capacity will be limited to 20 people for each performance.
Africanus Okokon is based in New Haven, Connecticut. He received a BFA in Film/Animation/Video from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013 and an MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale University in 2020. His work is an investigation into how cultural, familial, ancestral, and personal memory is remembered, remediated, and forgotten. Working with painting, performance, film, video, animation, sound, assemblage, and collage as concurrent approaches, the work is concerned with loss, the assumed truth of the recorded document, and the moral function of memory.
