2022 Summer Artspace Program

Join Artspace New Haven for our Summer Artspace Program (SAP), a four-week intensive led by local arts educators and teaching assistants. Artspace brings New Haven public high school students into its space for four intensive weeks to learn in order to help them develop a portfolio that will advance in their future art careers in searching for employment, attending college, or preparing for arts-based applications. Since its inception in 2001, SAP has given nearly 400 New Haven Public High School students the opportunity to conceive, create, and mount their very own gallery show, learn about contemporary studio art practices, delve deeply into the lead artists artistic strategies and methods, and build self-esteem while making a collective project relevant to their own lives.
Students will engage in a variety of courses to provide them with a holistic arts education intended to inspire and prepare them for portfolio reviews. SAP 2022 is offering one course each day of the week, each with a different instructor:
MONDAYS: Art History with Laurel V. McLaughlin
TUESDAYS: 2D Drawing with Sheldon Krevit
WEDNESDAYS: 2D Mixed Media with Ana Henriques
THURSDAYS: Digital Media with Kat Harrison
FRIDAYS: 3D Sculpture with Gabriel Pacheco

MONDAYS: Art History
Students will be looking at examples of portraiture, figures, and self representation throughout the 20th-21st centuries, reckoning with the questions: How and why do artists represent themselves and others? How do materials, context, technique, and skill contribute to representation? What choices do artists make in figural representation and how do they matter beyond the art object?
In this course, students will also learn how to write a biography (long and short form) for their portfolios, create a curriculum vitae (C.V.), and an artist statement. These are all key pieces of writing that applications require.
EDUCATOR: Laurel V. McLaughlin (she/her/hers) is the Director of Curatorial Affairs at Artspace New Haven. McLaughlin holds MAs from The Courtauld Institute of Art and Bryn Mawr College, and is currently a History of Art Ph.D. Candidate at Bryn Mawr, writing a dissertation concerning performative migratory aesthetics. She has taught courses on art history courses on self-portraiture, curatorial practice, critical theory. McLaughlin has shared her scholarly and curatorial work in conferences such as the Universities Art Association of Canada Conference, Université de Montréal and College Art Association, New York, and publications such as Art Papers, Art Practical, BOMB Magazine, Performa Magazine, Contact Quarterly, Performance Research, PARtake: The Journal of Performance as Research, and Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture, among others. McLaughlin has organized exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Arthur Ross Gallery and the ICA Philadelphia, and the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture, Portland, OR. She is currently organizing Footnotes and other embedded stories, on view through June 25, 2022 at Artspace New Haven in collaboration with Yale University Art Gallery and the traveling 2021–2023 survey Emilio Rojas: tracing a wound through my body forthcoming at Emerson Contemporary, Boston in Fall 2022.

TUESDAYS: 2D Drawing
Students will be introduced to a variety of drawing methods, and materials, each designed to sharpen their perceptual abilities, and improve their drawing skills. An awareness of drawing as a visual language will be cultivated. Students will engage in discussions about how to critique their work, and prepare a portfolio.
EDUCATOR: Sheldon Krevit is an award winning painter and educator, has exhibited his work with such renowned artists as Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, and Barkley Hendricks. Sheldon’s work has been the subject of numerous published articles, and is widely collected. He is a graduate of The Philadelphia College of Art (UArts) and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

WEDNESDAYS: 2D Mixed Media
In this mixed media course, students will explore the loose themes of the journey and identity. Students will experiment with mono-printing, mark-making and screen-printing techniques, having fun and problem-solving as they go. We will print on different textiles and incorporate elements of traditional craft, such as paper-cutting, embroidery and weaving.
EDUCATOR: Ana Henriques is a mixed media artist based in New Haven, CT. Her works on paper combine mono-printing and screen-printing with embroidered stitches, exploring the spaces that women fill and create. Ana received her BFA from York University (Toronto), after a gap year teaching in Hong Kong, and trained as an art teacher in Oxford, England.

THURSDAYS: Digital Media
This course will act as an investigation into Digital Media Arts as well as provide the resources necessary to finalize student portfolios in a digital format. Students will have an opportunity to experiment, innovate and take risks to pursue new ideas and produce works of art using digital cameras, scanners, iPads and Photoshop compatible programming. They will learn about contemporary artists working in digital arts, photography, illustration, advertising, fashion, interior, and graphic design. Students will be required to complete a final digital piece inspired by Japanese artist, Naomi Okubo, and her “Kaleidoscopic” portraits.
EDUCATOR: Kat Harrison (she/her/hers) is an artist and educator from Berlin, Connecticut currently based in Rochester, New York. Harrison has her BFA from Alfred University School of Art and a minor in Education and Art History. In May, Harrison received her Master of Science for Teachers degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to receiving her masters degree, Harrison was a high school Digital Imaging and Design Teacher and Associate Artist at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. Harrison has taught at art facilities, residencies and workshops in New York, Philadelphia, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Her work has been exhibited at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia; the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut; the World’s Fair Exhibition at the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio; as well as in group exhibitions in New York, Massachusetts, Oregon, Italy, and Australia. Her past research dove into three dimensional scanning, digital modeling and rapid prototyping technology and was funded by the Alfred Undergraduate Research Grant. Initially inspired by the colors and textures from painter pallet scraps (“Paint Chips” as she calls them), her art practice has shifted into paintings, ceramics and woven blankets. It is important to note that Harrison loves the sunshine, comfy dress pants, BLT’s and window seats.

FRIDAYS: 3D Sculpture
Students will create sculptures of themselves using found materials in the styles of artists such as Derrick Adams, Wangechi Mutu, and Gabriel Pacheco. Materials will include organic and industrial materials and focus on works that are socially conscious and responsive.
EDUCATOR: Gabriel Pacheco is a mixed-media artist from Puerto Rico / New York Currently in Jersey City who creates works informed by self-Definition,Cultural identity and the relationship that connects humans and nature. His sculptures and drawings reference the subtle balance between the organic and industrial through the juxtaposition of natural materials like wood and factory-made metal and found materials, creating a hybrid form of recycled art. Through his exploration, Pacheco provokes a reconsideration of what it means to create socially conscious art that works with rather than against the planet. Pacheco’s art is inspired by and pays homage to the History of the African Diaspora and honors Caribbean heritage, while suggesting the distinctly urban context in which they are created. I plan to teach a fulfilling arts experience full of humor, intelligence, and successful completion of artwork.
