The photography presented in the Artspace Flatfile was not made using a camera. Objects were arranged face down on the 12” x 17” glass plate of the Epson Expression 11000XL Graphic Arts Flatbed Scanner. Delicate items like peonies needed to be suspended with wire from above to gently rest on the scanner’s glass platen. The compositions typically take about an hour to assemble. The final scan is done in a darkened room, resulting in a black background to the images. Lighting from above the scanner is sometimes used to create a lighter color background. These high resolution digital photographs usually entail 2 – 4 hours of retouching. They are printed with archival inkjet inks on archival matte photo paper.
