Summer Apprenticeship Program 2005: Organic Bending

July 22—September 17, 2005

In a three-week residency, 15 students collaborated with New York-based artist Shih Chieh Huang to create a new interactive installation, using everyday materials from 99-cent store finds to reconfigured electronics. New Haven public high schools represented: Cooperative Arts & Humanities, Educational Center for the Arts, High School in the Community, Hillhouse, Hyde Leadership, Metropolitan Business School, and Wilbur Cross.

Huang merges artificial materials, air, water and electronics to create experimental organic living environments/sculptures. He disassembles everyday electronic appliances, devices and reassembles selected parts with dissected household plastic materials. The results of these combinations form a kinetic cause and effect system that interacts with the viewer.
