Dual Artist Lectures: Ruby Gonzalez Hernandez and Leonard Galmon

May 18, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Join Artspace New Haven, Yale University Art Gallery, and 2022–2023 Doran Artists in Residence, Ruby Gonzalez Hernandez and Leonard Galmon, for two consecutive artist lectures followed by public Q&As. The artists will discuss their current works featured in the exhibition Footnotes and other embedded stories, on view April 30–June 25, 2022 and created throughout their residency, offered in partnership by the Yale University Art Gallery and Artspace New Haven. Specifically, Galmon and Gonzalez Hernandez will address how such works express processes, research, and themes in their broader artistic practices.

Ruby Gonzalez Hernandez is an Indigenous Oaxacan artist born on Quinnipiac land (New Haven, CT). In her artist lecture entitled, “SubSeven: Subconscious Atonement,” Gonzalez Hernandez will discuss how she uses photography in printmaking to create language for religious exploitation, and redefine buried memory through CNC machining that translates cell phone images into woodcuts.

Leonard Galmon is a painter based in New Haven and originally from New Orleans. In his two-part lecture, “Weathering Doubt and Pushing Home,” Galmon will consider the societal and systemic conditions that perpetuate issues which permeate his studio practice, such as finances, family, and leadership. Part one of Galmon’s lecture explores his own sense of Black opacity, discovered through self-awareness, and how his work pushes abstraction to a place of being and vice versa. In Part two, Galmon will then discuss how opacity can serve as an assertive and affirmative place for Black people within oppressive systems in his portraiture.

This event is part of the programming series for the exhibition Footnotes and other embedded stories, on view April 30–June 25, 2022. As an in-person program, the exhibition opening will be limited to 50 audience members at a time in compliance with COVID-19 venue safety. Artspace New Haven encourages mask-wearing and social distancing. Please register for this program.
